League Championship Meet

Yesterday was my team's league championship track meet in which our girl's team placed 3rd and boys team got the win.  The stars of the meet were the three runners I mentioned in my last blog.  So I will just let you know how they did.

Cody Brazeal (8th grade) quadrupled in the hurdles, 1600, 800, and 3200 in that order.  He placed 3rd in the hurdles to start the meet and 2nd in the 3200 (11:07) to finish the meet.  Sandwiched in between that were to victories in the 1600 and 800.  Both events included exciting sprint finishes that Cody won in 4:58 and 2:14.  He scored 26 ponts for the team; one third of their total points.

Maddy Nikkel (7th grade) ran the 1600, 800, and anchored the 4x400.  She ran personal bests in all three of the races finishing 3rd in the 1600 and 800 in 5:24 and 2:26.  Most years both those times would win any junior high league, but this year had many exceptional girls running.  In the 4x400 our team finished 2nd (4:20) with their fastest time of the year by 4 seconds.  Maddy's split was 62.5, but she couldn't quite real in the team ahead of her.

Hagen Reedy (8th grade girl) had her greatest meet ever, which is a very big statement for her.  She won the 1600 and 3200 and placed 2nd in the 800.  In the 800 she raced a girl who has never been beaten and had a pr of 2:24.  The other girl went out in 65 with Hagen close behing in 68.  Both slowed to 76 and 75 respectively with the winner running 2:21 and Hagen running 2:23 (a pr by 2 seconds).  The 1600 was the first event she did yesterday and she was on mission to break our school record (5:12).  She ran the race perfectly, hitting all the splits we talked about.  She finished strong and ran an amazing 5:10, winning by 12 seconds and getting a new pr by 7 seconds.  Definitly in the top 3 of my proudest coaching moments.  She finished off her day by cruising to victory in the 3200 by about 250 meters in 11:48.  I wanted to make sure she had fun and enjoyed her last race for Alta Sierra.  She ended the year by setting 3 new school records: 800-2:23, 1600-5:10, and 3200-11:28.  The 3200 record was previously held by current Washington runner Lauren Saylor.

It was another great year and I look forward to watching all my athletes in their futures at Buchanan High School.
